EDIT - nevermind. I realized the piece that was still connected to the door was just the perfect length that it would stick itself backwards into the hinge of the gas door. I ripped it off and voila - it works now.
I was thinking maybe you just don't know your own strength and tore something important off in a Hulk-like rage
