5w-40 is fine especially where you are. Most oil is burnt I would guess when the car is warmed up, accounting for the most running time as well.

You said a thicker oil so I thought you meant over the 40 weight. When cars burnt oil in the old days they went to oil that was like molasses when cold. It made the wear faster but there was less blue smoke to show the buyer.
