It is best to wick away the old solder and try to clean the posts if you can as solder will not adhere to dirty or oxidized posts and then you could back where you started. My posts looked blackish until I scraped them clean.

As I always say you must use rosin cored solder NOT acid cored solder. Leaded and the newer Lead free solders (Tin-Silver-Copper) are treated the same way.
