The chances are on your side. In over 34 years of driving, I have had one such incident. In 1996 I hit a peice of metal in the road that flew up from the front tire and sliced a four inch gash in a rear tire.
EVERY other tire problem I've had was a slow leak, usually a nail or sometihng in the tire. I once pulled out a little triangle peice of sheet metal from the rear tire on the Crossfire. I fixed that like I do all my punctures: With a tire repair kit tool, a tube of cement, and a tire "worm".
I've fixed (on my pickup) some puncture wounds without even taking the tire off the truck. I know it'll be a mess when it happens, but I'm not leaving my little car behind because of it! Hell, motorcycles go all over without an easily-used spare.
