If they were clean then they should not have been touched as they are quite polished, I do not know what grade of emery you used but just the name emery means it was coarser then a polishing paper. If it is quite rough the contact may spark from different points and burn the faces.
Points are polished and normally at least one is domed to focus the spark.

That's my opinion anyway.
