gotcha...

i also recall seeing a thread where chips on the edge of the rim was repaired with what seemed to be "red lead" compound (i don't know what they call it now)... but its a thick sandable primer/compound... then sprayed over with a matching silver.

if i can't get a good match to the silver, i will use your idea...
