Absolutely true. It's not just the engines either. The LX chassis is based off of the W211 Mercedes chassis as I'm sure we're all aware by now. The communications bus is Mercedes (with some tweaks) and heck, even the WK1 Jeep was based off of the older ML body and electrics.
So for the OP, the short answer is "no", it has not been done and unfortunately, it's just not realistic, perhaps even impossible.
And there you have it. It is just not a realistic swap IMO. So one should do it only to prove it can be done. Otherwise, what is the benefit?
