Cars have been using the so called 'paper' filters for years with no problem. The problem lies with cheap Chinese filters, not filters sold by major filter companies. These cheap filters are used by the quick lube joints and they will fall apart, I have seen one in my second car when I got it. The filter was all floppy and was just plain useless.
The original filter on my '04 Crossfire was a 'paper' filter and it was made by Mann for Mercedes. When the extended oil change period was adopted the recommended filter was changed to the so called 'fleece' filter.
'Paper' filters are OK, just not for 7,000 miles.
