Paper vs Fleece Oil Filter
Hello Everyone. I bought my car in February, and have driven it about 5.5k miles since then. I figured it's time for an oil change since I'm getting new tires/brakes installed anyway. I went to WalMart and got two 5 quart jugs of Mobil 1 0w40 synthetic for $25.17 each, and then went to O'Reilys and got a Wix 51226 paper oil filter.
After calling around a few places to get some estimates on some labor-only oil changes, I was really surprised to find out that the local Chrysler dealer will do it for $13 compared to the $20 at the tire place, and $40 at a local European car repair shop.
My concern however is that after doing some research, I see that alot of people prefer the Wix 57078 filter because it's fleece instead of paper. Should I be concerned about putting the paper filter in to the car? I only drive around 6k miles a year, and don't do any kind of track racing (except for the occasional 100mph run on the freeway when I get antsy).

MB engines use fleece filters, dont put the paper filter on. Spend the extra couple of dollars and buy a fleece. Paper filters break down. So unless you want this to be flowing through your engine just buy a Mann fleece filter.

The original filter on my '04 Crossfire was a 'paper' filter and it was made by Mann for Mercedes. When the extended oil change period was adopted the recommended filter was changed to the so called 'fleece' filter.
'Paper' filters are OK, just not for 7,000 miles.

Cars have been using the so called 'paper' filters for years with no problem. The problem lies with cheap Chinese filters, not filters sold by major filter companies. These cheap filters are used by the quick lube joints and they will fall apart, I have seen one in my second car when I got it. The filter was all floppy and was just plain useless.

Good find !
If I didn't already have 6, I'd jump on this like a chicken on a June bug.
( Mobil1 0/40 5 quart at $25.17 at Walmart :
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Mobil-1-0W...Quart/23636902
)
That's a total of less than $60 for a DIY oil change, with 1.5 quarts left over !!!!!!!!

The Mann #1033 is a paper filter.
But paper filters were used for the past 100 years I guess, the good ones are OK but only for a couple of thousand miles. The fleece filter was put in to last for the extended oil changes time period.

You say this after putting up an ad for a paper filter with no explanation.

I do not use paper filters and I threw away two of them that I got with my cars. I took out a paper filter from my SRT when I changed the oil and it had collapsed, but it was put in by a Jiffy Lube shop when the oil was changed by the previous owner.

And, yup, I posted the wrong filter! Just a bad night, all-around. Took a tumble down a flight of stairs this morning. I should have gone to bed earlier and saved myself the foot-in-post! Before the pain killers kicked in.
Dave, I'm sorry, but it seemed to me you were advocating the use of paper filters. My mistake?

I have not been allowed to forget that after ten years.
Just inflamed in the area I had fused a few years ago. And burning pain down the R. leg. Ever hear of stenosis? Sucks!
So... I wish that link for the 9 filter would have been posted earlier. My fault for not being patient and doing my homework. I went ahead and had the Wix 51226 paper filter installed along with the Mobil 1 0w40 that I got at the local WalMart for $25.17 per jug. The local Chrysler dealer did it for $14.50. Is the paper filter okay to leave in there for a few thousand miles(3-4k)? That should last me about 6 months worth of driving.
Or should I immediately change it out for the fleece? I'm a poor college student, so I'm just trying to save $9 for a few months if that's at all possible
(And I know I shouldn't have this car as a poor college student, but it's just so purdy and fun to drive.)

I think we've all lived on the edge of a budget before.. LOL. You should be okay with your thoughts.. but I'd definitely cut back at Mcdonalds and get the fleece in as soon as I could.
Don't let a cool car get in the way of college. I'd drive a beat up 1974 Dodge Dart if that is what it took to go to college.
Other than that, Fleece all the way when it comes to oil filters.

No problems with a Mann paper filter for a few thousand at least, probably for 7,000 if you pushed it. We are not talking of a filter made by the Hann Toilet Paper Company of Peking.
I'll go ahead and get the fleece in ASAP then. I get paid next week, so I'll grab it then. When I do do the swap, should I add any more oil in since the old one will be saturated with just a bit of oil? I've still got 2 quarts left so it's not an issue if I have to add a little in.
And thanks for the support. I just had to put new tires, brakes, wipers, and get the oil changed. When I got the tires done, I also found out that the alignment is off, so that will cost me another $70 to get that fixed. Oh the joys of car maintenance.

The oil filter hole (sans filter naturally) is the easiest place to refill the oil, it acts as a natural funnel that will not move if you nudge it.
