Hi Eric,
The best standalone ECU unit that you could use is the Autronic SM-4. The best way to use it is to use it with the standard ECU. You only need to adjust the fuel, timing with the ECU unit. I have a friend in Sweden with a SLK32 who is running it flawlessly without any issues.
I will mount it in my own SRT-6 within a couple of weeks.
P.S. The Auttronic SM-4 has also a launch control feature
