Do I have to disconnect the original amp? Does it require a lot of wiring?
Oh, no. This is pretty easy. Instead of having the OEM amp run the subs, badly, I installed an amp and a Pioneer head unit. The head unit has RCA outputs to run to the new amp.

The subs are disconnected from the OEM amp and run from the new amp right there under the passenger seat.

My Pioneer was ~ $85 and the amp was $65. You can always have a car stereo shop do the install.

I did run #8 power wire from under the hood.
