I was able to slide the new pulley onto the crank and it does eventually line up with the remaining key but when I pulled the old pulley out it looked as though a large chunk of the key had been sheared off.

This is the shape of them, so tapping on one end should rotate it out. I say should ........
Do not damage the side of the slot and pinch it in there.
