Thanks for your follow up . . . Yes I did read about adjusting the lock out solenoid in the repair manual. After much diagnosis, I don't think that was the issue as the shifter was sending out randomly incorrect position signals. (ie like when the shifter was in park it was would display "R" on the dash indicator etc.). I think the previous owner had accidently spilled some liquid into the shifter at some point. I found a replacement shifter assembly for only $145.00 delivered to my door so rather than continuing to mess around trying to fix or adjust the shifter I just replaced it (kind of the same way they fix things at the stealership) . . .
