If you have an owners manual it tells you how to fix it.
What you do is...
There is a little push in door or flap at the base of the shifter plate. Can't miss it.
Put the multitool that should have come with the car in the hole, If you don't have the tool use a phillips screw driver and just push down it will release the shifter.

Something made this happen so check your fuses for a blown one.
This has happened on mine and I remember being temporarily freaked out.
Don't worry but if you don't have a owners manual, get one.

Thanks for trying to answer my question.

The auto stick is NOT stuck in park.

Upon stopping in parking lot I could not put it into park. It would only go into neutral. I only have neutral and drive. I can't get it into reverse, park or remove the key.

I have read the manuel about the multi tool. I tryed pushing down but it will not move. All the fuses are good.

Maybe it is a brake switch failed but I do have break lights.

Car is a 07 limited.

Thanks

Well I finally got it, maybe.

I checked the service manuel for anything electrical. I tryed the multi tool, again nothing.

Now, I'm getting pissed. After all day trying to figure out what's wrong, so I jerked the gear shift back & forth & it finally came undone. I sprayed with crc down in the hole and hope it doesn't happen again.

I still have no idea why it stuck.

I'm reviving this old thread because I have this problem intermittently with my SRT6 rescue roadster. Sometimes when I go to put the shifter up into park, the lever will not move beyond the neutral position. The only way I can get it back into park is to turn off the engine / ignition which frees the lever and I can then put it back up into the park position. It may function normally after that for some time or it may continue to do the same thing for awhile. It's obviously some sort of an electronic lock function that is affecting the shifter. Also this malfunction sometimes triggers the check engine light and puts the transmission into limp mode. Any thoughts on the cause of this problem before I go trying to replace the entire shifter assembly?? I'm going out to check for trouble codes and will update this post if I find anything.

This is a problem with the adjustment, see manual.
I guess you are golden now though.

Thanks for your follow up . . . Yes I did read about adjusting the lock out solenoid in the repair manual. After much diagnosis [and pulling the trouble code P0705 Transmission Range Sensor Circuit malfunction (PRNDL Input)], I don't think that was the issue as the shifter was sending out randomly incorrect position signals. (ie like when the shifter was in park it was would display "R" on the dash indicator etc.). I think the previous owner had accidently spilled some liquid into the shifter at some point. I found a replacement shifter assembly for only $145.00 delivered to my door so rather than continuing to mess around trying to fix or adjust the shifter I just replaced it (kind of the same way they fix things at the stealership) . . .

That was the best thing to do in this case. Unfortunate.

Helped me too. I'm sitting in my car typing this wondering if I should sell my 05 srt 6. She keeps having issues that are so random. I'm dealing with this shifter situation and after checking fuses, changing bulbs and relays for my brake lights they randomly come on when I went to move it for service... it's like one magical issue after another but I love to here it purr when she starts up.

In reference to your brakes. There are two switches on a SRT6: one is near the top of the brake peddle under the dash and another is on the master brake cylinder under the hood. Either one could be acting up. You should get a good scan that will get into the Mercedes codes. It may even turn out to be the CAB module.

If you get stuck, I have three shifter assemblies sitting on the shelf.

What the other guy said, PM him. He's our new "fearless leader" for the Fall event in the Carolina's so he DOES check in here, but right now he's really busy getting ready for the BIG MEET!
