How can that be..two separate chambers? How do I get the coolant into the chamber with the sensor?
This does not make sense to me..

There is more than one chamber, the center chamber holds the reserve and it is connected to the other chamber by a tube. the other chamber fills when the coolant gets hot and there is a tube connecting the two chambers, a pressure in the system keeps the tube and the chambers at the same pressure. A lack of coolant in the system takes fluid from the full chamber to make up the missing fluid. It relies on that fluid be kept in the tube, no fluid in the tube and the missing fluid is not made up. Hence one chamber can be empty and the other full.
I did this write up on memory, look in the service manual for the correct explanation.
