Sounds on track.. I replaced my case.. and barely had the chip out of position and had the "start-die" syndrome.. realized my case wasn't quite closed as it was sitting on the chip "out of place".. fixed that and all was good. Buy the blank case before you do this.. I'm 3 for 3 on having to destroy the old one to get the guts out..
