I always used 91 octane, even before the upgrade. Lower octane gas can inhibit your cars performance. I'm no expert on petrol, but even in my '97 Eclipse GST I use 91 octane. Oil changes every 3.5k, tune-ups every 30k, and 91 octane in my Eclipse has given me 113k miles on my motor and it is still going strong. The extra money for the octane is money well spent, in my humble opinion. Any experts out there feel free to chime in.
