The top should not have moved if the trunk lid was open, you should check the microswitch within the trunk latch.
Unfortunately, that switch is not easy to access, you will need to disassemble the trunk latch mechanism.
While you are at it, remove the locking pawl from the end of the electrical lock solenoid.
