I got my SRT from Ft Lauderdale in 2011 and the latch had been done with silver duct tape, I have not touched it and it is still in one piece today. On my old NA I just adjusted the hatch stops and it was fine after that. I think that normally if you can just get the adjustable stops set properly you do not need the tape.
Strange thing, the SRT came with clear stickers where the stops hit the body and the 2004 NA did not have them and I added them as the stops damaged the paint. I guess Karmann noticed at and added them later.
