NO. Mine actually DID fail, in the closed position (on the Graphite car). The result was that no exhaust gas flowed back into the intake EVER - resulting in a CEL and P0401 code. This meant that part of the delay in the throttle (caused by the valve being open in normal operation) was gone because the valve never opened. It gave the car more responsiveness and 'pep'. So much so, that once I got the EGR replaced, I put in an EGR cutout switch for my amusement.
Using the switch would, again, take some of the throttle delay away and make the car more responsive. The CEL would light, but once I turned the EGR back on, the CEL goes away in three drive cycles.
You know, I wonder what it would do if the EGR was stuck OPEN. Now that is something to consider, I guess. You SHOULD see a CEL and code P0402 if the valve is open all the time or too much.
