If LED is more efficient then it has to produce less heat for the same light output. With the heat produced in the front of the housing or less heat in the rear of it which is best, I cannot say myself.
You certainly want to keep them sealed away from moisture as they supposedly are now.
The above Weisslicht seem to be small enough to fit in the headlight unit, closed with cap. At least, that's what they advertise
