I personally would consider replacing it when replacing the flex joints when and if required, I have seen the flex joints cause problems many times.
u R 100% right if U R replacing under 10 to 15 year maintenance.. but when U here the knocking and not sure if it is an axle or drive shaft ???, I have been with
JS Benz for 3 years now and have seen about 20 carrier bearings go bad, 4 is Crossfires, the flex joint none, but we have replaced them because of cracks (weather and or stress cracks) I have replaced my carrier bearing twice and my flex joints once. my car has less than 60,000 miles and 7 years with the V8. jim
