Makes perfect sense to me. Needle nose pliers is what I used in the past to remove those pins. Only difference was I used a thin bladed screwdriver to lift the pin slightly until I could get the pliers underneath to lift/pry. And like you, I also have a plastic pin removal tool for this now.
