If I jiggle the rotary dial I can get it to change speeds as well. I have removed the unit and done the repair suggested by CL770. I have also replaced the fan motor resistor. There is a fix that was posted by a new member some little while ago. Basically he said that the connection of the front plate and the PCB behind it was poor and caused trouble. I'll look for the fix and post it in this post.
