To loosen the sleeves which are pushed against the alternator you use a soft mallet or lever and move the alternator back and forth loosening the clamping sleeves. The sleeves which are around each of the bolts are pulled by the bolts forward pushing the alternator into position against the fixed forward stop.
That's how I remember it is done.
Naturally I may be a little wrong but that is the basis of the clamping arrangement.
