I originally suspected the water pump, but it appears bone dry. I also think someone has had the interior appart, to maybe replace the heater matrix
Yes, separating the systems is definitely a good idea, and would help the diagnosis. Some of us have chosen to install a small reservoir that you can open up and "See" if the IC water level is dropping and is an easy way to fill and flush when the time comes around. You can see some pic.'s of mine when I did it by going to my profile and clicking on the album "IC spit tank reservoir". Good luck in finding the leak.
