I'm experiencing a problem with the automatic transmission on my '05 roadster. (which has only 49,000 miles) It won't shift out of second gear. Reverse, first and second run fine. My local dealership tells me that the transmission needs to be replaced, however the transmission (they claim) is no longer available and furthermore, when it was available it cost $8,000.00 plus labor. They then told me that even if I could find a salvaged transmission that they do not recommend doing a replacement because "it rarely works correctly". They then asked me if I would like for them to give me a "trade-in" estimate to buy a new car from them.

I am, of course, skeptical.

Does anyone have any experience with transmission replacement or repair? Any advice is appreciated.
