Unfortunate that you had to learn the hard way. If we were going to paint some bare wood or metal we would use some primer paint which gives the top coat something to cling to, the same goes for some glues, it needs a secure base to adhere to.
JSK said it was a must but the questioner found it easier to heed the most convenient answer, I guess many of us have done the same at some point.
