From my experience with my wife's Mercedes here is what I think. Going to take a stab at it. Had you or some one else changed the oil or removed the cover? It is easy to break the part that secures the cover. She took it in to be servicednoticed the rattle latter. They had indeed broken the clamp that secured the cover.

Worth a shot pulling it off to take a look.
