Default Ohhh ... crap. Shift linkage disengaged

Coming out of a right turn the gear **** jumped out of its house ... scared the crap out of my son. It is an '04 w 170k miles, recent clutch change (10 months ago ..)

Basically the shifter disengaged from the transmission, hit the asphalt, and broke the shift stick housing

So I have some questions for this knowledgeable group ...
- What is this part actually called, so I can look it up?
- Do I need to drop the transmission to replace it? I am assuming yes, but hope someone knows differently
- Did we miss something when putting the transmission back in? It came off relatively easy, and there was a 'soft' pop when putting it back on
