Ohhh ... crap. Shift linkage disengaged
Ohhh ... crap. Shift linkage disengaged
Coming out of a right turn the gear **** jumped out of its house ... scared the crap out of my son. It is an '04 w 170k miles, recent clutch change (10 months ago ..)
Basically the shifter disengaged from the transmission, hit the asphalt, and broke the shift stick housing
So I have some questions for this knowledgeable group ...
- What is this part actually called, so I can look it up?
- Do I need to drop the transmission to replace it? I am assuming yes, but hope someone knows differently
- Did we miss something when putting the transmission back in? It came off relatively easy, and there was a 'soft' pop when putting it back on

Re: Ohhh ... crap. Shift linkage disengaged
So the part assembly is called "Transmission Shifter" part number 05098490AA.
You do not need to remove the transmission to replace the Shifter assembly.
The linkage rod going from the shifter **** to the back of the transmission should not be able to fall onto the ground. Look at the assembly picture below. There is a support bar that would stop that rod from falling to the ground. Now if you were able to reattach the rod to the transmission running below that support maybe that could happen.
There is a mounting pin that holds that shifter assembly to the transmission. It has a retainer clip that attaches to the transmission case. Was that on, or did that come loose?

Re: Ohhh ... crap. Shift linkage disengaged
Thanks for the pic and info. I did get the pin and retaining clip back on after changing the clutch ... I remember part this because it was a bear to get the holes aligned and on correctly!
With the way the brass colored bar is sitting on the drive shaft, it looks like something else broke or I did not have the retaining clip on correctly, allowing the linkage rod to come off. Once the rain lets up I'll get underneath and take a closer look.
Meanwhile I'll be searching for a replacement assembly!

Re: Ohhh ... crap. Shift linkage disengaged
Found the issue ... 2 bolts from the driveshaft are gone, 3rd backed out enough that the shaft came loose from the transmission and destroyed the transmission shifter (the horse collar portion)
So, need to add some bolts and more locktite to the shopping list ... and double check the torque settings

Re: Ohhh ... crap. Shift linkage disengaged
In my teenage years, need I say more, I managed to shear the pinion gear shaft off the rear differential on the car I was driving. Unattached to the differential the driveshaft was rotating at high rev's hitting the ground and then the underside of the car. I thought the pistons where coming out of the engine as the car shaked violently as the driveshaft kept loudly hammering the underside of the car.
So at 16 my best friend and I figured out how to replace a differential.

Re: Ohhh ... crap. Shift linkage disengaged
I wear brown pants ... no need to change
New transmission shifter installed, along with some new brackets and drive shaft.
Only issue now is we cannot get the shift lever to move to 1st, 2nd, or reverse ... it won't go that far to the left unless we lift up on it. I'm assuming there is some place to adjust this??
Follow-up: I found this post where the "shift cable" is mentioned along with no 1st, 2nd, or reverse- https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...n-problem.html
and this picture : https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cro...d92df11148.jpg
Nothing is labeled "shift cable" but I'm assuming it is #4 in the picture. All the parts numbered 4, 5, 6, & 7 are in place. If I lift the shift stick up we can get 1st & 2nd gear, so I think it is something in the "floor shift" (#2) that needs adjustment ??
Any advice is appreciated!
*** Edit - found the page in the service manual to adjust the linkage, and specs for the Miller 9120 tool. Will post results!
