Default Shift linkage bushing?

Has anyone successfully replaced the bushing between the shift selector rod and the shift lever on the transmission?

I've got, supposedly, the correct bushing, but I'll be damned if I can get the thing into the hole on the shift lever...much less get the selector linkage rod into the the bushing. The bushing is #28 in the diagram.

I was hoping there were some trick to getting the busing in. I've tried heating it to make it more pliable, still can't get it in. If I attach the bushing to the linkage rod end first, it looks like there's not enough room to attach the clip to hold the rod in place...**** I give up. The germans win this battle....

That's because you are too far away in Australia, I can see it quite well from Canada.

It sounds like you are referring to the seal for the selector shaft. The bushing to which I referred is the one that cushions the gear selector shaft from the selector lever on the transmission. Any who...

It seems as though MB has replaced 1409920010 with 2109920010. As you can see in the link below, the profiles of the bushings are VASTLY different. I received the 2109920010 part number and damned if I can get it in. Plus, as stated earlier, the linkage rod does not protrude far enough past the bushing to allow you to attach the retaining clip.

I've reordered the 1409920010 from a different company and I'm hopeful that they will NOT send the substitute. Someone has actually created a special tool to press the new-style bushing into the selector lever. Unfortunately, there's so little room to work in there and, as far as I can tell, the tool wouldn't fit.

I'm guessing you have the "old" part, which looks like it would be much easier to replace.

I order a new "old-style" bushing from AutohauzAZ using part number 1409920010 and got that part without substitution. The EPC shows 1409920010 as being replaced by 2109920010. Trust me on this one, don't order that part number. The replacement part will take a minor miracle to install. I've tried them both. The 140 part number went in with just a little warming (to make it malleable) and bang! Job done in 15 minutes. Before I got the original bushing, I worked for the better part of an hour trying to get the 210 bushing in. Not gonna happen.

By-the-by, there are a couple of other parts houses that list the "old" number. But they wanted $10 - $15 to deliver a $1.50 part. I routinely get my filters, etc, from AutohausAZ, so I'm going to pick up a couple of extra bushings for future needs. Hmmm, speaking of future needs, do they sell flux-capacitors?

There must be a good reason that the "old" part number is still available, and no, I don't think it's just NOS.

After installation, my shifter is solid and QUIET. No more clanking and jangling! Plus no more self-imposed shame for having a great car that sounds like a "Radio Flyer" when shifting from "P" to "D"! (That's tonight's "Joke for Old People!")

I feel good. The god's have smiled upon me. I guess the Kool-Aid will have to wait....
