The gas tank is a sealed unit except for the fuel level sensor which can be removed.
You can see the fuel filler tube in the trunk by removing the black trunk liner on the side where the filler tube is. You can take this out by removing the black fasteners that hold it in place. You do not have to remove the side panel above it as the Service Manual says.
I assume you are looking for leaks.
