You can see the fuel filler tube in the trunk by removing the black trunk liner on the side where the filler tube is. You can take this out by removing the black fasteners that hold it in place. You do not have to remove the side panel above it as the Service Manual says.
I assume you are looking for leaks.

Re: boot/trunk strip out
Remove the centre pin in the black retainers and then remove the black retainer and then carefully pull the panel down and away from the roof side panels.

thanks for this help and info, do i just pull the pins straight out or do they need to turn a certain way to get them out, can i get to the fuel level sensor with just taking of side panel, sorry for these questions just need to know before if i found no leak where else might then smell of fuel be coming from, could the fuel cap not fitting tight be causing it do you know?, thanks

Leakage outside the car often leaves tell tale signs on the driveway. Go at it slowly and maybe save time in the end.
Re: boot/trunk strip out
hi , the fuel gauge hasn't on dash gone down so i assume no petrol leak and also no signs of petrol on the ground, just going to get into the boot area of petrol tank to make sure all is well in that area , the smell of fuel in cabin has only happened since i filled up with fuel until to the max clicks to say its full,
