i thought maybe the ground wire leading to transmission might be corroded (and it was) so I replaced it but it still seems like a he car doesn't hold a charge.

Search forum for how to find/fix a parasitic drain, sounds like you have something not shutting down OR a leaking current issue. Make sure you disconnect the battery until you are ready to look for any parasitic drain or you'll further damage (if it is not 100% OK now) the battery. I do know once a wet cell drains down to a certain level, it never returns to a full charge. The cell plates 'sulfate' reducing its ability to provide peak current (power). Using a good quality charger that conditions/helps with minor sulfation should restore it quite well (depending on if and how much is present), but if you just have a parasitic drain (and you fix it) the battery might not be damaged at all. In my opinion, a corroded ground cable could not 'drain' a battery while standing, it'll just severely limit its ability to allow current to flow when needed. Doesn't hurt to replace it since it needed it anyway though. Good luck!

About the rubber plugs under the rear of the car, they are located just behind (rearward) of the axles on the bottom of the well area (lowest point). There is one on either side easily seen if you lay on your back and slide under a little. If you get into the lower area under the carpet & styrofoam (where the tire kit and jack is stored), you'll see them from above inside the bottom of that well space. Just puncture a hole in each of the two (one on each side). If water gets in, it'll simply drain out below the car.
