Interesting, but pretty hacky. Even if you did have to hack, there are single fittings that would have replaced his mess in there. Got the job done, but definitely not how I would approach it.
You can still order those connectors and they sell the hose but it is no longer yellow. Then you would just splice the new hose to the yellow one.
