Default NEW M113 engine VIDEO (M112 applicable)

(I have no idea why he says "M113K", as he talks about every version of the M113 engine)

Neat video! Those shots of the tech putting the badge on the engine is the guy who built the M113K in my car. Pretty cool!

Wow, bet that was unexpected, eh?

If anyone has ever wondered about the general layout of the M111 Kompressor engine this video is self-explanatory as long as you have a knowledge of automotive components. The only bit I was unsure of appears at 2:08. That's the electrically-operated supercharger bypass valve (I don't know the actual name!) which either routes air into or around the supercharger. In the USA the M111 engine is fitted to most Mercedes-Benz labeled "SLK/CLK/C 230 Kompressor". However some vehicles with an M271 engine carried on using the '230' label even though they were only 1.8L.

Here are the head to head stats for a 2002 SLK230 vs a 2002 SLK320, each fitted with a 5spd automatic.
SLK230: 0-60 7.7s mpg 23/30(25)
SLK320: 0-60 6.5s mpg 20/26(22)

Interesting, but pretty hacky. Even if you did have to hack, there are single fittings that would have replaced his mess in there. Got the job done, but definitely not how I would approach it.

You can still order those connectors and they sell the hose but it is no longer yellow. Then you would just splice the new hose to the yellow one.

At least knowing they are pneumatic explains why they go up & down so slowly & silently. Gotta admit that really surprised me! I thought that was ancient American 60's technology.

GM patented pneumatic central-locking in 1958. Mercedes started using it in 1968 and have stuck with it ever since.

The pneumatic locking system has been a problem for years, the pump in the trunk gets wet from leaks, the yellow vinyl hose breaks at the flex points which are in the rubber conduits at the bottom of the doors and at the top of the hatch. The yellow vinyl hose is replaced by urethane hose. It is impossible to remove all of the yellow hose as it is incorporated in the wire loom. Just replace the flexible length of hose with urethane hose with a hose with an inside diameter which is a tight fit on the outside diameter of the yellow hose and the urethane hose, do not use vinyl hose, or use a barbed 5/16” outside diameter straight fitting.
When a yellow hose breaks you can hear the hissing, Generally only a portion of the locking system fails, but the car will remain open or closed in that portion of the system. I replaced the whole line from the hatch lock to the pump with blue urethane hose when I fitted a backing up camera. The hose is 5/16” inside diameter. You could use 1/4” inside diameter hose if you heated the end up and stretched it to 5/16”, I tried it and it worked fine on one little job.

Are there drain-plugs which we're supposed to remove in the trunk? I haven't thought about it since mine is garaged.

I flat LOATH the system. My 1987 Mercedes 190 DT (kind of rare since its the only year the turbo diesel was imported here) uses it to run everything from the climate controls to the door locks. Always has issues from time to time.

On the topic of Mercedes engines here's a TOTALLY unique application. He's transplanted a 5.0L M113 V8 into a W124 but had adaptor-plates made so he can bolt on a Ford 351 intake manifold with a Demon 650cfm 4bbl carb!
His project name is the Hillbilly Hammer.
