Default Re: Common Issues and Maintenance

As the cars have aged, we sure are learning that three things will leave you stranded more than all the rest causes combined:

1) Sticky Key - the ignition switch mechanism locks up in the "Lock" position. You CAN NOT get around this, if it happens, you are stuck, period. The best way to fix it is to per-emptively tear into the dash and just remove the offending two little parts. Look for our "Sticky Key" thread, download the PDF, print it out, and fix it. If you dont want to, print the PDF and take it to some garage or DIY guy and get it fixed.

2) RCM - the Relay control module is going to fail you. Soon. Maybe today. I've had three cars and two of the three quit running at one time. THe fix is two-fold:
Order a new RCM and put it in.
Take the old RCM and send it to DJ in Arizona for rebuild - then keep it in the trunk. You can swap them out without tools, it's that easy. Seach "Mystery No Start" for an indepth explanation.

3) Crank Position Sensor - I have had this fail one time, no warning, under a traffic light in traffic. When I got ot where I was going, I put a new one in. Not hard to change, but you pretty much can't get htem locally. You go to one of the reputable sources (Needswings, FCPEuro, German Auto Supply) and buy one, keep it in the trunk.

Eventually, like all cars, you will need a water pump, fuel pump, alternator, battery, etc. But those items are nothing unique to Crossfires....
