I just had a similar situation with my 2006 base roadster. It turned out to be the gas cap. I had replaced it with an aftermarket cap. I had 3/4 of a tank and the gas light flashed. I reseated the cap and all was good for a weak.
Then it flashed again and the Check Engine light came on. I put the original cap back on and no trouble. You might want to try a new original Mercedes cap. It would be cheaper than the filter.
