Before you take it all apart maybe see if anyone else has an answer. I think we are talking about two different springs. There is a spring that holds the little access panel in place and it is easy when doing a sticky key to have it drop. It does not have any effect on the steering column. All it does is cover that access area. I have lost a couple over the years and have just advised people to hold on to them as I haven't figured out how to replace it. It will not cause any functional issues. Cosmetic only.
