Default "Frame" around windshield

Whenever I get a rock chip (too often) in the body paint I touch it up with touch up paint so that it won't rust. I've had a couple of rock hits not in the main body but in the silver colored "frame" (probably not the right word) that all Crossfires have around the windshield. I tried to get touch up paint for that and the dealer said they don't sell it b/c that piece/part is not metal and therefore needn't be touched up because it won't rust. Is this true? I could still touch it up for cosmetic reasons with auto store touch up paint, but I figured if it's not a conducive surface the pain might run. What is this part made out of and do others touch it up with paint?
