Default CPS and Check engine light

I'm pretty sure my crank shaft position sensor has finally failed. I have (2) on the way from autohausaz.com. The car starts now that it is cold, but now the check engine light is on. Just wondering if the light comes on after the failure of the sensor? The car has been a
flawless performer the 7 years I have owned it. I have fixed all of the XF quirks through the years, as they have happend.

Try this. Remove the CPS, use electronics contact cleaner, wipe down and reinstall, oh and clean the plug assembly. I am betting you would get like new service.

The failure mode determines if the light comes on or not. There have been times the light did not light, but in my case it sure did.

REad the code, that will tell you all you need to know.

Thanks Pizza Guy. I started it again later. No check engine light. Tried it 4 or 5 times. All ok. I don't trust going anywhere until the new Bosh CPS gets here. The day it wouldn't start, I returned from Trader Joe's, put my food away and was going for a burger and brew
a few blocks away. The engine just turned over and over but wouldn't start. I tried it about an hour later when engine cold and it started right up. It has started every time I tried since. Don't want to take a chance getting stuck somewhere.

Clean the connector on your harness anyway.

Thanks onehundred80. I just printed your pdf file on changing the sensor. I have to have someone do it for me. I had the main arteries in both arms removed (used in by-pass surgery) and I have very little feeling and lots of tingling in my fingers

Curious, has this worked (long term) for anyone?

My check engine light came on briefly, only after installing new Bosch crank sensor, then the car cleared it. The connector has a plastic retaining clip on it's side.
This may be a good time to have tighed1 go over your RCM as well. I'm in Hemet/Riv.Co. I'd be happy to help if I can.

Thanks everyone. Trying to decide how I want to proceed. Cheapest quote to replace the sensor if I provide it is $216. The other quotes are all around $300 and they have to provide the sensor for warranty reasons per Calif. laws. Every quote charged for 2hrs labor.

This has got to take all of 20 minutes to do.
Unscrew the little bolt E-8 (?) take the hole unit out of its hole while it is still attached to the cable and then take the connector off the CPS when you can clearly see it.

Wish I could do it. Physically unable. Before the last surgery I did the RCM and the Sticky ignition repair (the ignition was a real b--ch). Just found a company called your mechanic. They have a guy coming to my house (should be here in about 45min) to do the job. Checked on him and he is legit. Total, using my Bosch Sensor is $83 with a 12,000 mile written warranty. Will let you know how things work out. Check out their web-site.

Done!!! Took him about 20 minutes. He had the right tools and knew what he was doing. He arrived driving an old Merc 300D. He said it gave him good mileage while carrying all the heavy tools he had in the car. My car runs great. It even got rid of the little miss and hesitation that had developed. 12 month 24,000 mi warranty incl. Total price using my sensor was $83.
