I've done neither so far, but the chip is on the horizon.
The chip costs about half as much as the exhaust, and I believe that you will get more power (if I'm wrong, I'm sure I'll be corrected).
Your car will also look 'stock', except when you leave people standing!

From what I've read on the forums here and general knowledge of exhaust systems, the chip will give you more of the instant boost in HP. The exhaust will give you maybe ~3 HP. I have the upsolute and love it. The exhaust allows the system to breath a bit better so the natural progression if you can't do both at the same time is to chip first, then exhaust.

Do a forum search for Upsolute Chip. I'm not trying to be a smart a$$ or give a meaningless reply, it just that here has been so much written on the subject and it has been heavily debated.

You'll have to make up your own mind if the chip is worth it. I have the chip and seem to have noticed a seat of your pants improvement, BUT Upsolute has never provided dyno results showing how much of a power increase there is, if any.

The last debate was between an Upsolute distributor who could not come up with any test results, nor would he share the cost of a dyno run with a forum member who offered his car for the test for a discounted price of getting his vehicle chipped. Go figure...

I'm not disagreeing with xfiring regarding the natural progression being chip, then exhaust.

On previous cars I've chipped, they've recommended doing the chip after everything else.
This way the chip is programmed to take into account everything else you've had done - i.e.) a 'one-off' for each individual car.

It sounds to me like the chips for Xfires are just an 'off the shelf' program.
I haven't fully researched them.
Of all the companies out there that do chips, they all state the same hp & torque gains.

Just a thought!

Most chips we've come across on this forum are an "off the shelf" program. Do you have any numbers for hp gain on your previous cars and what chips did you use?

With all the variables of what mods have been performed on a specific car, I find it hard to believe a programmer would sit down and write a program for a specific car with certain mods at a reasonable cost.

No, I don't have any figure - it's that long ago.
I know when I did my Mustang, I gave them a list of everything I had done to the car, and they worked all that in.
The car I did previous to that was in England, and they don't make it any more.
I'm looking into getting my ECU done this year.

What chips did you use in the past, what was the cost of a programmer sitting down to write a specific program just for your car and then installing it?

Without numbers... hp gains are only speculative guesses.

Like I said, it's that long ago - I can't remember, and I don't have any info.

It's hard to believe you can't remember who did your chip, especially when they sat down and wrote a program just for the specific mods on your car.

The first guy that did a chip for me was a guy named Neville Turner, in Lancashire, England.
This was about 14 years ago.
It was done on a Peugeot 205.
If I could remember the cost and power/torque changes it would be totally irrelevant to this topic, and not beneficial to anybody.
The place where it was done has closed, and was in another country.
The car it was performed on is no longer manufactured - however, I still own it.

My initial reply only hinted at considering buying an exhaust prior to buying a chip - especially if both are going to be purchased - this way the full effects of tuning MAY be able to be achieved IF the chip was not an 'off the shelf' chip.

The way I perceive it, if a person buys something for their car, and they are happy with it, it is not a waste of money - in their opinion.
Everybody has different tastes.

I was under the impression that this forum was supposed to be an asset, and constructive, where people are able to share their experiences so other people may benefit from them.
Recently, there appears to be plenty of replies where people are getting trashed - which isn't doing anybody or the forum any good.
