Chrysler and General Motors merger?!?!?!

OK......I've heard rumors about this a couple of times in the past year, but now it's on the news as a 50/50 chance. I never posted about this before because I thought it was just that......a rumor.
I just think GM is after Chrysler's few billion dollars in cash reserves, but I could be wrong. The new Ram is expected to be a strong seller, as well as the minivan business and the Jeep brand.
Are the two companies just trying to ally to make it a bad deal for Kirk Kerkorian given the poor economy?
What's everyone's thoughts, opinions?

My opinion is that it will never happen. These talks are very preliminary and neither companies have even looked at each others books. The only advantage I can see is that they would lay off any jobs that would be duplicate.
I think that as far as Cerberus, they are trying to make a profit with their purchase of Chrysler and will be looking to try to stick it to GM and leave them holding the bag.
It reminds me of my water safety class where they warn you that if you swim out to save a person, they will try to cling to you and you both may drown.

My big question is this: IF the merger does happen, will GM honor Chrysler's lifetime powertrain warrantee? The whole thing seems like a PR stunt, as most people don't own a vehicle long enough to really reap the benefits. It's not transferrable, so it's probably saving them money over the transferrable 7/70 warrantee that the second owner can buy for $150.
I plan on owning my 07 Coupe for many many years however, so if the tranny goes out at 150K you better believe I am counting on that warrantee!

I don't think most people realize how close this thing is to becoming a reality.
The worse the economy gets the more they will be looking into this. Remember.....Cerberus owns Chrysler and the majority share in GMAC ! Basically they could put GM in a stranglehold to push this abomination through.

Guy's this will not be a "merger"!! If this happens you can Kiss Chrysler goodbye!!!
GM want's Chrysler's 11 billion dollars to weather the economic downturn. Currently GM is losing 1 billion per month. They wanna raid Chrysler's piggy bank to save themselves from filing chapter 11.
Then after the "merger", GM will cease operations of all car lines except Jeep and the minivans. They will also end the Dodge and Chrysler car brands.
This is a VERY bad thing for Chrysler, and American workers. Be vocal about your opposition to this "merger". We need people to know its bad for the American Auto industry!!

Hope it doesn't happen! Cerebrus wants OUT, GM wants Chrysler's money!
All the people in Michigan (my father included) that work at Chrysler WILL lose their job!!!! They'll just replace them with GM people, take all of Chrysler's money and call it a day!!!
