Default Great Alternative to Play IPOD on Factory Radio without breaking the bank!!

Hey everyone After doing a lot of research on wanting to play IPOD on my XFire and not wanting to get an aftermarket radio that changes my dash, I found an alternative solution to play IPOD/IPhone music on my car and keep the factory Radio.

The solution is Alpine DPR-RDS1 iPod Adapter for RDS: Item 500DPRRDS1 in Cruthfield - $90-$100

This is not one of those lame radio transmitters. Its an FM modulator that is wired to your factory radio in Crossfire.(I installed this on my Nav unit with Infinity sound)

To get it to work Here is the list I ordered ( I am no export on car electronics and was able to do it just fine

1)Alpine DPR-RDS1 iPod Adapter for RDS: Item 500DPRRDS1 in Cruthfield - $90-$100 Item: 500DPRRDS1
2) 12040VW21 Motorola/Female to Volk/Male Antenna Adapter
3) 12040VW12 Motorola/Male to Volk/Female Antenna Adapter
4) 120869001 Universal OEM DIN Tool Pair For select VW and Mercedes models

I paid $120 total including shipping.(No tax in CA) I saw this idea in some Porsche forums that alot of owners were trying and getting good results so I tried the same.

I wanted to get the IPOD adapter that is mentioned from "Ipod for Factory Radio with Navigation is Here" thread but , it was months and months wait and sit around to get a large headcount for the next batch. So I took control of this myself.

Here is my experince:

*) It works flawlessly. I have been using it for 2 weeks now and never heard any static or hissing at all

**) When I connect it the ipod to my car and start the car or the ignition the ipod starts automatically so if I have a good playlist playing I dont have to worry about going to the ipod and try playing a song everytime I get in and out of the car.

***) The sound quality is "almost CD" quality. It would be a lie if said its CD quality. BUt to be honest I dont notice the difference when I play the same song I have from my CD or my IPOD when I tested this.

****) Only downside its not plug and play. Once you pull the radio out you need to connect the 3 wires (red, yellow and black) from the Alpine to your harness (brown, red and pink) by either using a scotch lock or T- connector. Or you can use "butt connectors" like I did. I have more instructions and photos for those interested in. I can't post any pictures here for some reason.
See the harness here

Have you had any experience with wireless FM transmitters? My biggest gripe with mine is the lack of volume from it. When you compare it with a CD, the volume is NOTICABLY weaker. Is this the same with your method? I would love to do this mod and am interested in instructions. Thanks for the write-up!

I don't understand, you had a chance to get in on the first buy and you didn't. We waited almost a whole month to get the last two people. Now we're on the second go around for the iControl. While it's nice to find another option, this is still just a glorified FM transmitter. You can't control the iPod from the radio and while this is subjective, sound quality of FM rivals only that of AM. You can't fix it's inherent lack of response across the board. Sorry if you feel I'm being harsh but I've tried just about anything and everything to get my iPhone piped into my radio.

Also, where did you route the wire to come out at? Thanks!
