Driving the xfire a couple days ago, off the line running up thru third (have the 6 speed manual) and Boom feels like I hit a rock. Car shuttered, and all seemed to go back to normal. All shifts were clean, but I knew something wasn't right. I had an intermittent jolt that I honestly though was a skid plate coming loose and hitting the road.

So run the car to the friendly mechanic, and an hour later got the call. transmission bearing exploded! transmission in need of major surgery.
little detective work on his part and a rebuild is 3K (rough numbers) new transmission is 9K from Chrysler!!!!!
So current transmission is on its way out, rebuilt (22K miles being installed) and my car will sit on the hoist for a couple weeks while the new clutch (may as well right) is sourced and delivered.

Now I am really glad that my run to the dragon was shelved cause this happening away from home would have been a very bad thing

Gotta love these cars.
good news is since it is going to be in his shop for a while, he is going to tinker with it and complete a number of little tasks and preventative things (bearings, brakes, and such)

car has 116K miles, anything else that anyone can think of that I should be doing while it sits in pieces.

 

Have you changed/flushed all your fluids? Diif? Brakes? Power steering? Muffler?

I've replaced the muffler on 2 of the 3 cars.. What fluid is recommended since I still have the stock one on car 3?

Fluids in everything are being changed

If they had a decent body / paint guy I would have them take off the silly racing stripe on the car, but they are concerned of the after effects and additional work needed to restore the paint.

That will wait until it is back on the road and someone else with more experience will look after that.

AND what is the correct weight for headlight fluid. My USA crossie is running in Canada, so I need to adjust for C vs F

Yep, a loose K'nippeal pin on the Johnson rod will let it leak out.

The hardest problem is getting to the blinker fluid resivoir.

Did your mechanic check for internals from a newer jeep wrangler?
They have the same nsg370 manual trans.

 

Also on the 6sp Liberty. (First jeep with a 6sp!)
I assume the tail housing casting is different, but I don't really know.

 

Well then....I didnt know that, phone call to my mechanic is in order.

If all you need is bearing and the syncro's are good then the bearing and seal kit for the nsg370 is 160-200 on ebay

 

Mechanic has it all ripped apart bearings synchro and clutch being replaced. That along with a couple other odd jobs needing done and we will be back in the road by the end of the week

Should have gone to the dealership. Wonder what the bill there would be???????

Drove it for 5 minutes, and couldn't care less. I do like driving that car

Complete rebuilt.
Original transmission out and a rebuilt replacement.

From what I was told, it was the most cost effective method of correcting the "blown" transmission.

 

Looks like there are tons of used transmissions for under $ 1,000. One close to me with 3,000 miles on it. I would guess $300-$500 labor would be fair,sound right?
