Best order for engine removal
I am going to take my 6 speed manual n/a engine out and I am looking for the best way/order to do this. I have just bought a 2 ton crane to help. Any ideas ????
What you must do is keep a systematic log of the order you take things off and keep all the parts you take off in that step, the part and it’s screws etc all together in a marked box, tin or all together on a shelf or whatever. This way you can reassemble the engine in the reverse order. Photos can be a help, easy with today’s digital cameras and phones.
I did this on an GM V-6 engine and decided at one stage to skip ahead and put on two parts, wrong. I had to take the last part off again because it fouled a part I had skipped over as it went on.
Parts come off in order 1, 2, 3 etc and go back on in order 3, 2, 1. This saves a lot of frustration and time.
If I recall two lift points are already on the engine and there is a lift point you have to add. A nice engine stand makes life easier, I made one from 2x4s locating on the engine mounts it was OK but more awkward than a good engine stand. Good luck.
Just curious, is it easier to pull the engine and trans out as a unit or separately? I'm sure the more you remove from the front of the car the easier to remove the engine.
Hardest part was getting the picker to move as I was on asphalt, had I been on concrete there would have been no problem at all.
I ended up using a 2X4 lever an inch at a time to get it away from the truck.
The problem with leaving the transmission in place is that there will be no support for the front of it, unless you rig something up with a jack stand or whatever.
easier for reinstall, to make sure clutch, trans shaft lines up good.
what is your reason for engine change out?
miles on original ?
using new pressure plate, clutch and flywheel ?
Hi, I am changing my engine to a S500 v8, uprated clutch but keeping the standard 6 speed transmission.
Should have been a 5.0 option.
one would think that with the nsg370 used in the jeep wrangler there has to be somebody to strengthen the trans, but none that I have found.
you still get your cruise control and all systems to work with josh's tune?
cruise control very important to me
let me know how the nsg370 holds out with the 279 torque rating, as long as you don't get in a habit of dropping the clutch and burnouts, would think it would be fine.
