Does anyone have any idea what is under those foam pieces that contain the useless spare tire repair kit located under the mat in a coupe? I am thinking about removing them and using the space if any to build a sub flat into the hatch area so that it faces straight up at the rear glass. I have a box now but I would like to utilize the space (if any) where those foam pieces are so that I can free up some trunk space. Thanks.

 

The foam to the left and right goes down quite a ways. In the center, is the a hump, that you can see that does not go down. They are curved down from that point on each side. On the right rear, is a pump for the automatic door locks,, on the left side it is completely open.

 

I'm working on putting my sub down there on the drivers side and the amp on the pass. side. Will post some photos soon.

 

Under the right side foam you will find the central locking pump assembly and security module. I don't think there's anything under the left side.

 

Here's what you will find under the foam on the pass side. The drivers side is the same only no air pump.

I cut a hole in mine and it fits my 6 disk cd changer perfectly.

 

thanks for the info guys. guess i'll be ripping them both out and making a custom enclosure...i'll try to post some pics for update...i only have 1 12" MTX sub so it should be just fine.

 

I'd think twice about completely removing. I remember reading somewhere that the foam is a critical part of the energy absorption system in the event of a rear impact.

 

So that's why we don't have a spare... it's all about the style.
The center exhaust is right in the middle of the well, the more you know.

 

well from the looks of it that foam wont do a whole lot to stop a fast moving car from crushing our little cars. its a mercedes. i live on the edge and i'm willing to take my chances. but thanks again for more info. i'm just tired of that speaker box flying everywhere.

Well if he's adding a sub, I don't think he's worried abour sound and vibration dampening in adding more of both...

 

I put an Infinity 10 inch sub on the drivers side.
