2 different radios?
I have a 2004 coupe. An early one.. 2050th to be exact. I recently had to have to radio replaced under warranty because of loud static when playing CD's. But they didn't put the same radio back in. It looks identical but some different features. Before i used to be able to press the last button on the bottom when playing a CD to select a track. Above the last button had a down arrow. When i hit it the numbers 1-9 then 0 would come up. I could hit 1 then 2 and it would jump to track 12. Or just hit 7 to go to 7. But now that they replaced my radio. it looks the same but doesnt have this feature. I looked in my manual and it doesnt mention that feature at all. If they switch the radios on later models or something?
In late 2003 there was a TSB for swirching out the radio (something with display).
To my knowledge the only difference with the radios is the added option with navigation. Did your first radio have navigation or better, does the new radio have it? If you have there should be a "nav" button on the top right.

I think the TSB had to do with the display being hard to read. The NAV radio is an upgraded version available as part of a package or as an option.
It might be that there were running changes in the radio and your early car had a version that was deprecated (made obsolete) by later ones.
