Default New JL 13.5 Sub System by BLKFIN (Scott!)

Hey!!! Just got back from BLKFIN's (Scott's)!!! We (well actually just him lol) put together a new subwoofer system as well as a new KDS 1000 JVC headunit!!! For the sub, we used a JL 13.5 Shallow mount subwoofer and for the amp a Infinity Reference 1600a. It was mounted in a box made by Scott and the cover was made also by Scott with a Carbon Fiber looking wrap! He did an AWESOME job!! and this thing really pounds!

Ill take some night time pictures a little later tonight! Also will be making a cover to go over the system so I can still use the trunk when needed!

Looks great. It is nice to see people changing things up a little. I give it a 10 out of 10.

I fabbed the box a few weeks ago. It is only .8 cubic feet and SLAMS with that sub in it. A 1000/1 would be over kill, you just need 600 watts or so.

I took out the old JL 8w6s that I had in my silver box and replaced them with the new Kicker Solo Classics that just came out. These little babies ROCK to!!!

Wonder if there would be any talking either of you two into making a short video of how the sub pounds from inside the car and from outside. Curious about acoustics of the car and rattles from outside.

No video camera can accurately capture the sound. You can look at videos on YouTube all day of stereos and the all sound like crap through the microphone~

How much would a box like that run?

The box is the easy part… you could have a local shop build you one for $200 or so. This tough part is the “trim panel”, they would probably charge you $500-$600 bucks for it and the box.

Really nice look'in piece of work! Great job, and you can still use the trunk! Just don't put the eggs from the grocery store back there.

But you could put milk back there and have a milk shake.

Looks great! Can't wait to hear it.

=) hehe Scott is da best!.. Going to try to start working the rattles out of the trunk, but one of the rattles is behind the actual bumper so we will see lol.. But yeah i deff. pounds lol. Also still trying to get it tuned right, but even so its still sounding sweet... Added some dim blue lights behind the rear trunk vent space.. gives is a blueish haze... purty cool!

^^ Update on rattles,

Located the majority of them actually stemming from the box itself, the rest were the actual hatch which i solved with some soft sided velcro.. But im very confident that the dynomat will almost totally eliminate the rattles.. (used 2 20lbs weights sitting on several towels on either side of the sub with the hatch up and down and was unable to hear any rattles.) I'll let yall know how it works out!

The most annoying rattle you're going to get at low volumes is the vents inside the bumper fluttering around. This is even so for me with the stock system, and even when it's not turned on! If you remove the taillight access panels and look down you can see the vents on either side. Crank it up and watch the fabric flap around and make that stupid noise! I wish there was some remedy to this.

Question!!!!

So i finally got it all sounding great, but on a select 1 or 2 songs (Example is "Put on" by Young Jeezy, at a particular point of the song, i will hear a large discerning klank of a pop, as if the subwoofer was bottoming out... its happened a good 4 times now, since i had no idea it was about to happen or what the hell it was lol...

But its strange since the amp im using is 600rms @ 2ohms, 400rms @ 4ohms, on a Single 3 ohms 600rms 1200 watt peak 13.5JL....

Do ya'll think it issss the sub bottoming out and i just need to watchout for those songs?? It happened right as the sub was going from a mid sound to a low one in both instances.... Hate to hear this sound evvveerrr again lol...

Thanks

I think it is the sub bottoming out......when it hits the lows it drops hard. I tell you stay away from that song by Drake "Successful" a max volume....it has some good lows.

It is not the sub, I would bet it is the amp clipping. Amps clipping are the number one cause of blown subs so please be careful! The amp clips due to low voltage, both in car voltage and music voltage going down the RCAs.

You can cure this with a bigger amp, a line driver or turning it down!

I recently installed the same sub in my car with an Alpine PDX1000.1 powering it (way over kill) and I can tell you from personal experience that if this sub bottoms out YOU WILL KNOW IT. It sounds like a capacitor exploting and will scare the crap out of you.

I have the gains on the amp all the way down (counter clockwise) and I still have to be cautious not to over load the sub.

I do have to say that this sub is very musical and can POUND.
